Girl, do you even lift?

For our project we created a Facebook page to persuade our female followers to use the weights room when training. The idea came about as a result of many female gym-users expressing that the weights room felt exclusive to males and projected an intimidating atmosphere. Concerns were also raised regarding a lack of knowledge as to how to use the equipment to full affect.

In such, we decided to create a page in which we offered both a daily article revolving around female weight lifting and the benefits of varied training, as well as a workout of the day. The workout of the day started simple and steadily progressed in complexity as the 8 day trial period went on. The intention was to give our followers an idea of the types of exercises they can use, as well as allowing them read about the subsequent benefits.

Behaviour change was measured through a poll survey. The survey was initially posted at the start of the trial, asking followers to ascertain how likely they were to use the weight room when going to the gym. On completion, the poll was resubmitted to establish whether any change had been recorded. The results showed that many of our followers were more willing to use the weights area having followed our 8 day trial.

Below is the breakdown of responses to each poll:

Informed consent was detailed and obtained through the Facebook page.
