Perfect Workplace

Well, same as the majority of 3rd year students I do not know what I am doing after my degree. One of the areas that interested me a lot is Advertising and Communication. So let’s pretend I am in an office environment and I am a manager of an advertising agency.

I believe that the best way to have a hard working team and make people in office like you is to be supportive, be engaged in work, participate in project discussions, but give workers responsibilities etc.

To encourage people to work harder I would give more responsibility to the person who came up with the idea and a plan for the project. If I feel that person feels confident surrounded by people and does not get shy when referred to in a crowd, I would declare the successful idea and the name of the person who created it. The person than could lead the project and explain to the rest of the group his/hers ideas and thoughts on how the final work (advertising) should look like. Smola and Sutton (2002) found that employees need to be treated like valued members of the company and to feel their importance.

If the person is shy and does not feel comfortable to be standing in front of the whole office I would say something like “Good job! Like your idea!” directly to the person, so he/she knows that the work is appreciated.

Many people nowadays are career driven, and money is an important factor that pushes us to work hard… or just work. Enjoying the work and recognition from managers is very important however for many people money is main motivator (Lawler, 1981; cited in Tang, 1992). Taking that into account, I would make bonus payments (something extra added to the salary) for those who showed commitment, effort and productivity. Those payments would be granted to the lucky ones every 4-6 month. This will hopefully encourage their work and make others work harder in order to achieve same recognition with the responsibilities and extra cash!
Well..let’s just hope that those ideas will make me a good manager some day!
